13th October 2009 - 'Mixtaped' DVD delay, and award for No-Man video

Due to technical difficulties, the manufacturing of No-Man's 'Mixtaped' DVD has been delayed. The discs are currently being re-designed and re-authored by Carl Glover and Ray Schulman and a new release date will be announced shortly.

The band are extremely sorry for the delay. New release and shipping dates will be posted as soon as they're available.

(Please note that the limited-edition 'Mixtaped' highlights audio CD will still only be free with No-Man store pre-orders only.)

On a more positive note, the band are happy to announce that Neil Whitman's video clip for the No-Man song "Back When You Were Beautiful" won the Animation Trophy/Best Animation Award at the Kent Film Festival on September 26th (the full award lineup is here). Taken from a song originally released on 2003's 'Returning Jesus' album, the entirely-CGI video was created by Neil over a seven-month period using Cinema 4D software, and is included on the 'Mixtaped' DVD.

There is an image from the video to the left, and a small-window version of the video can be viewed here.

No-Man - 'Wherever There Is Light' EP

27th May 2009 - 'Wherever There Is Light' EP (updated from 27th April)

No-Man's new EP 'Wherever There Is Light' was released on 11th May 2009 and is available directly from Burning Shed. (A dedicated page with sound samples, full details on tracks, musician credits and lyrics has been added to this website.)

Acting as a bridge between No-Man's elegiac 2008 return 'Schoolyard Ghosts' and the forthcoming live concert DVD 'Mixtaped', 'Wherever There Is Light' is a strictly limited-edition CD release.

The poignant title track (from 'Schoolyard Ghosts') features an incredible guest performance from US pedal steel legend Bruce Kaphan (American Music Club/Red House Painters) and flute from frequent band ally Theo Travis. The alt-country-tinged Death Was California and the atmospheric Counting are two new songs especially written for the EP and recorded at No-Man's Land during 2008 and 2009 (Counting features a guest performance by the live band electric violinist Steve Bingham). Carolina Skeletons and All The Blue Changes are the first recordings released from No-Man's autumn 2008 mini-tour, featuring the full live band and taken from the London concert at Bush Hall, 29th August 2008.

Also containing Grant Wakefield's poetic video for the title track, a powerful preview from the 'Mixtaped' DVD and striking Carl Glover artwork, the enhanced 'Wherever There Is Light' EP is a rare and beautiful thing.

The full tracklisting for the EP is:

  • Wherever There Is Light
  • Death Was California
  • Counting
  • Carolina Skeletons (live)
  • All The Blue Changes (live)
  • Wherever There Is Light (video)
  • All The Blue Changes (live video)
No-Man 2008

10th February 2009 - 'Mixtaped' concert DVD/CD, documentary and new No-Man material

The live recordings from the No-Man mini-tour of autumn 2008 are now complete in terms of audio soundtrack and visuals.

The band are planning a double DVD release in spring/summer 2009, which will be called 'Mixtaped'.

The DVD will feature a second disc comprising a detailed documentary on No-Man's history, written and produced by Richard Smith and featuring interviews with Tim and Steven, as well as several extras.

An audio CD of the best of the Bush Hall performances, also called 'Mixtaped', is likely to be released at a later date.

No-Man have been working on two new tracks over the past few months. The songs are called Death Was California and Counting, with the latter featuring a contribution from live No-Man violinist Steve Bingham. These pieces are not intended for a new No-Man album, and are likely to appear as part of the 'Mixtaped' releases.

10th February 2009 - other No-Man news

‘Schoolyard Ghosts’ has met with poll success in German rock magazine ‘Eclipsed’, having reached #5 in the reader's charts in October and subsequently being voted #23 in the critics’ poll for best album of 2008.

The ‘Schoolyard Ghosts’ track Pigeon Drummer will feature in the forthcoming fifth series of the cult BBC comedy ‘Ideal’.

Dan Faltz’ short film 'Weak Species', featuring music by No-Man, has now been completed and will be shown at various festivals in 2009 (there is an online trailer for the film here). Dan is currently in talks regarding developing the story into a feature film (which will also involve a soundtrack containing No-Man's music).

No-Man

10th February 2009 - roundup of news on work outside No-Man

Steven has been busy with the production and promotion of his debut solo album ‘Insurgentes’, which will be released on 24th February (pre-order copies available from Burning Shed.) The album features contributions from regular collaborators Gavin Harrison, Theo Travis and Dirk Serries (Vidna Obmana, Fear Falls Burning) as well as Tony Levin (King Crimson), Jordan Rudess (Dream Theatre), Clodagh Simonds (Fovea Hex, Mellow Candle), plus psychedelic musician Sand Snowman, British jazz guitarist Mike Outram and koto player Michiyo Yagi.

The first single from ‘Insurgentes’ – Harmony Korine - will be released in mid February (available for pre-order from Kscope). Full information on both single and album is available on the 'Insurgentes' promotional microsite, including details of an 'Insurgentes' remix competition.

Steven has mixed and mastered the debut album by Israeli progressive rock band Ephrat. The album, ‘No One's Words’, is out now on Inside Out Music and features guest appearances from Daniel Gildenlöw (Pain Of Salvation) and Petronella Nettermalm (Paatos).

Steven also sings on two tracks - Faded Flowers and Riverrun - on the new Sand Snowmanalbum ‘Two Way Mirror’. The album is out on February 11th on ToneFloat (Headphone Dust is also stocking copies for order).

Tim has co-produced (with Alistair Murphy) the third solo album by former Fairport Convention/Trader Horne singer Judy Dyble. The album – called ‘Talking With Strangers’ - also features Simon Nicol (Fairport Convention), Jacqui McShee (Pentangle), Julianne Regan (All About Eve) and no less than three members of King Crimson (Ian McDonald, Pat Mastelotto and Robert Fripp). Tim himself sings backing vocals throughout the album (as well as contributing “the occasional instrument”) and duets with Judy on the album's likely first single, Grey October Day. Both album and single are scheduled for a spring 2009 release. Tim and Alistair have also co-written most of the album with Judy, including the 20-minute Harpsong.

'California, Norfolk' - Tim's 2002 collaboration album with Peter Chilvers - is to be re-released in a deluxe edition including the whole of the original album, the 'Overstrand' re-mixes release and 'Winterton', an EP of acoustic versions of 'California, Norfolk' songs.

Tim appears on the debut album by Norwegian folk/electronica project The Opium Cartel (led by Jacob Holm-Lupo of White Willow). The album - called ’Night Blooms’ - will be released by Termo Records on March 16th, and Tim’s main contribution will be vocals on a cover of the Brian Eno song By This River.

As regards ongoing projects, Tim continues to work with Giancarlo Erra (Nosound) on a collaboration album. Work on final performances and mixing will take place during early 2009.

Tim has also been working with Michael Bearpark (one track from the sessions, Beyond The Firing Line, features Steve Bingham and is now on Tim’s MySpace page).

Finally, Tim will also be singing on a new piece co-written with US rock band OSI, which will feature on the bonus disc on the forthcoming 'OSI III' album.
